Alien Righteousness

From iustitia aliena, righteousness from outside. The righteousness by which a Christian stands before God is not their own and never becomes their own property; it belongs to Christ and is reckoned to them. This is what Lutherans mean when they call justification forensic: a verdict declared over you, not a quality detected in you.
