Salt and light

Don’t hide what’s good

You already have something the world needs.

Key points

  • What it means: Jesus doesn’t say “try to become light.” He says you are light, to a crowd of fishermen, farmers and nobodies.
  • Try this: Do one good thing this week where it helps someone, without explaining why you did it.
  • The good news: You don’t have to make yourself shine. Jesus is the light of the world, and you shine because he shines on you.

What he said

“You are the light of the world.”

Matthew 5:14

Find it: Matthew 5:13–16

Read Matthew 5:13–16

13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. 14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. 16 Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

What it means

Jesus doesn’t say “try to become light.” He says you are light, to a crowd of fishermen, farmers and nobodies.

Salt keeps food from spoiling and gives it flavor. Light lets people see. Both only work when they’re used. Jesus says goodness is meant to be seen in what you do, not hidden away or talked about.

At work

  • Honesty and fairness get noticed, slowly. People remember who was fair when it cost something.
  • Your values show up in small decisions, not mission statements.

With people

  • Kindness changes the temperature of a room, a family, a group chat.

The hard part

Later in the same sermon Jesus warns against doing good to be seen. The difference is the motive: let people see the good, not show off yourself.

Try this

Do one good thing this week where it helps someone, without explaining why you did it.

The good news

You don’t have to make yourself shine. Jesus is the light of the world, and you shine because he shines on you.
