The hymn gives glory to the risen Christ and pictures the angel rolling back the stone from the empty tomb. It tells believers not to fear, because Jesus lives.
It follows the resurrection accounts in Matthew 28 and John 20. It is sung on Easter and through the Easter season.
Edmond Budry wrote the French original, first printed in Lausanne. Richard Birch Hoyle translated it into English in the 1920s.
