“Crown Him with Many Crowns” at HymnaryAbout this hymn
The hymn pictures Jesus wearing many crowns and honors him as the Lamb on the throne and as the Lord of life, who rose from the grave and rules forever.
The image comes from Revelation 19:12, where the rider called Faithful and True wears many crowns. It is sung in the Easter season, at Ascension, and on Christ the King Sunday at the end of the church year.
Matthew Bridges wrote the first version in 1851, and Godfrey Thring wrote further stanzas in 1882. Many hymnals combine the two.
