About this hymn

"Here I Am, Lord" (first line "I, the Lord of sea and sky") moves between God's voice asking whom to send and a person's reply offering to go and serve.

It rests on Isaiah 6:8 and on the call of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3. Jesus calls his disciples in the same way, and sends them to serve the poor and the hurting. It is sung in Epiphany and after Pentecost, and at ordinations and commissionings.

Daniel L. Schutte, a Jesuit composer, wrote the words and music in 1981.
