“For All the Saints” at HymnaryAbout this hymn
This hymn gives thanks to Jesus for all the saints who have died in faith. It calls him their rock, their captain and their light, and looks ahead to the day when the whole church rises and gathers before God.
It rests on Hebrews 12:1, the great cloud of witnesses, and on Revelation 7, the countless crowd before the throne and the Lamb.
It is usually sung on All Saints Sunday in November and at funerals. William Walsham How, an English bishop, wrote it in 1864.
