“Beneath the Cross of Jesus” at HymnaryAbout this hymn
The singer asks to stand in the shade of the cross, as a tired traveler rests in the shade of a great rock. At the cross the singer sees both the suffering of Jesus and the love that led him there, and asks for no other glory.
The picture of a rock in a weary land comes from Isaiah 32:2; the hymn applies it to Jesus, whose death gives rest to the weary. It is sung in Lent.
Elizabeth Clephane of Scotland wrote it in 1868. It was published after her death, in 1872.
