Sacramental Union
The Lutheran account of how Christ's body and blood are present in the Supper: truly present in, with, and under the bread and wine, which remain bread and wine. Not transubstantiation, which says the elements cease to be bread and wine; and not consubstantiation, a scholastic term Lutherans have consistently declined. Lutherans confess that the presence is real and decline to explain the mechanism.
