The Fourth Commandment

From Luther’s Small Catechism, 1529

You must honor your father and mother. [So that things will go well for you and you will live long on earth]. (Exodus 20:12)

What does this mean?

We must fear and love God, so that we will neither look down on our parents or superiors nor irritate them, but will honor them, serve them, obey them, love them and value them.

In plain words

God gives you parents and other people with authority over you, like teachers and leaders. Do not look down on them or try to make them angry. Instead, honour them, help them, obey them, love them, and value them. God uses them to care for you.
