Inerrancy
The teaching that Scripture, as originally given, contains no errors in any matter it addresses — historical, scientific, or theological. Several Lutheran bodies (including the Missouri Synod) hold this; the ELCA does not adopt it as a formal doctrine, affirming instead that Scripture is inspired and authoritative for faith and life without requiring that every historical or scientific claim be inerrant. The difference is significant in how each body approaches biblical interpretation.
